Telltale on taking advantage of the iPad

GDC Europe 2011: Back to the Future developer's James Lamorticelli talks about bringing adventure games to the fastest-growing gaming platform on the market and how other developers can do the same.

Who was there: James Lamorticelli is the vice president of publishing at California-based developer Telltale Games. He's been with the company for three years, working on franchises such as Back to the Future and Sam & Max, as well as the forthcoming Jurassic Park, which is being shown later this week at Gamescom.

What they said: Developers are excited about the iPad. Apple's device has sold over 15 million devices since launch, and 9.5 billion US dollars were generated on the iPad in 2010. Games are also the most popular category, accounting for 16.6 percent of all app purchases. This, according to Telltale Games' James Lamorticelli, makes it the fastest-growing gaming device on the market.

Telltale Games has brought 18 of its games to the iPad to date, including Back to the Future and Sam & Max. One thing it has learned is how Apple's worldwide iTunes store changes the split of worldwide game sales. Back to the Future, for example, enjoyed 42 percent of its sales in the Europe, Middle East and Africa territories, 36 percent in the US, 19 percent in Asia, and 3 percent in Latin America. The upshot of this is that the company now needs to localize and translate its games for these markets, and Lamorticelli promises to "localize all products going forward." This includes the second season of Sam & Max on the iPad, which the developer announced at GDC Europe today.

Another important part of iPad development is marketing. Lamorticelli admitted the company enjoyed a good relationship with Apple thanks to being an early developer, and the company helps market Telltale's games as a result. There's still a lot that the developer can do on its own though. The first is with price: "We've tried to discount to $4.99, then $2.99 and even $0.99. Also, free content for a limited time opens up a worldwide opportunity to play our games."

Another key component of Telltale's strategy is the episodic release of its games. "We want to try and drive people to download new episodes; we notify them if the next episode is coming out. Episodic is a great way to continually engage your audience." Despite the success of digital, though, he was quick to sing the praises of retail, with Telltale bundling a number of its franchises up on a disc this year across the PC, Wii, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Quote: "We find licenses that are underdeveloped or emerging," Lamorticelli said of working on licensed titles from Jurassic Park to The Walking Dead.

Takeaway: There's already huge potential for developers on the iPad, and the market looks set to continue to grow. An episodic release schedule is an approach that has worked for Telltale, while discounts and temporary promotions such as free episodes have also driven interest. However, the iPad is only one platform for the developer, which continues to release its content on as many devices as possible in both physical and digital forms.

Sprint bumps early termination fee to $350, wants to play with the big boys

Never count the little guy out. It seems Sprint's ramping up its game in preparation for the possible three-way carrier brawl lurking just out of view. The Hesse-led company revealed a coming change to its ETF for customers with smartphones, tabs, laptops and netbooks. Beginning September 9th, Sprint will charge a $350 termination fee -- the same as Verizon and AT&T -- that will be pro-rated depended on the number of months left on a subscriber's contract. The charge is a hefty step-up from its prior fee of $200, clearly signaling to the marketplace that it demands to be seen as a contender.

Pakistan to ban encryption software

Internet service providers will be required to inform authorities if customers use virtual private networks in government crackdown

Millions of internet users in Pakistan will be unable to send emails and messages without fear of government snooping after authorities banned the use of encryption software.

A legal notice sent to all internet providers (ISPs) by the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, seen by the Guardian, orders the ISPs to inform authorities if any of their customers are using virtual private networks (VPNs) to browse the web.

Virtual private networks allow internet users to connect to the web undetected, meaning that they can access banned websites and send emails without fear of government interception.

Pakistan's 20 million internet users have previously been banned from popular social networks, such as Facebook, because of blasphemous material about the prophet Muhammad. All internet traffic in the country travels through the Pakistan Internet Exchange, which can be intercepted by the military and civil intelligence agencies. The move echoes a crackdown against encrypted communications across the border in India and in China.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority legal notice urged ISPs to report customers using "all such mechanisms including EVPNs [encrypted virtual private networks] which conceal communication to the extent that prohibits monitoring". Anyone needing to use this technology needs to apply for special permission, the notice said.

Authorities in Islamabad insisted that the ban on VPN access was intended to stem communications by terrorists.

However, banks, call centres and many other businesses use encrypted connections to communicate with their branches and customers, to protect sensitive data such as account numbers and passwords.

"This is like banning cars because suicide bombers use them," said Shakir Husain, chief executive of Creative Chaos, a Karachi-based software company. "You have to find out who these guys [extremists] are. This is a blanket, knee-jerk, response."

There is strict regulation of internet traffic in Pakistan. Last year, the authorities banned the entire Facebook website for months after a user launched a contest to draw a cartoon of the prophet Muhammad. Accessing the internet on BlackBerry smartphones is problematic, because of the device's high-security encryption software.

Recently the regulator made it impossible for Pakistanis to access the website of Rolling Stone magazine, after it published an article on the high proportion of the national budget in Pakistan that goes on its military.

Shippin' Out August 21-27: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Eidos revamp of cyberpunk franchise launches alongside Capcom's downloadable Street Fighter III, Activision's latest Call of Duty: Black Ops map pack, and Devil Survivor Overclocked for 3DS.

If the gaming release schedule were a roller coaster, this week would be the top of the tallest peak, where a slow buildup of anticipation over a light summer slate of titles is about to give way to the lightning-fast succession of twists, turns, dips, and corkscrews that is the holiday release season.

Kicking off the gauntlet of highly anticipated titles is Square Enix's cyberpunk revamp Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Developer Eidos Montreal has said it wants to stay true to the spirit of the original Deus Ex, allowing players to choose their own approach to each level. Depending on the augmentations players choose, they can go through each part of the game with a focus on combat, stealth, hacking, or even social interactions.

Deus Ex will be available in two versions: The regular $60 edition and a $70 Augmented Edition. The latter will include premium packaging for the game, a 40-page art book, a DVD with behind-the-scenes features, and a motion graphic novel included on a bonus disc. Players who preorder from specialty retailer GameStop will get a new mission--complete with a cameo from original Deus Ex protagonist JC Denton--as well as in-game assists in the form of a grenade launcher, explosives, and an automatic lock pick.

The other notable retail release is Atlus' 3DS adaptation Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked. An enhanced 3DS port of 2009's DS strategy role-playing game Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, the game will feature the same basic story as the original, with a group of teenagers trying to escape Tokyo after the city goes into lockdown following a demon invasion. As for new bells and whistles, Overclocked will feature full voice acting through the game, remastered art to take advantage of the 3DS's higher-resolution screens, and an extra epilogue chapter continuing the story.

There are also a pair of high-profile offerings on the downloadable front, with the Xbox 360 debut of the Call of Duty: Black Ops - Rezurrection map pack and Capcom's Street Fighter III Third Strike: Online Edition for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The unfortunately spelled Rezurrection is a $15 add-on that includes five levels for Black Ops' Zombie mode, as well as a 20-song Zombies soundtrack and a Moon Xbox 360 theme. The first four maps (Nacht der Untoten, Verruckt, Shi No Numa, and Der Riese) are remakes of the environments from Call of Duty: World at War, the game that first introduced zombies. The fifth map--Moon--is entirely new and takes place in outer space, on the moon.

Meanwhile, as its name implies, Street Fighter III Third Strike: Online Edition is an online-enabled edition of the arcade fighting game Street Fighter III Third Strike. What isn't quite as obvious is that Capcom has made a number of enhancements to the game, including a revamped user interface to take advantage of the system's HD capabilities and a handful of visual filtering options.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

WWE All Stars bring the fight to 3DS

THQ confirms over-the-top, arcade-style wrestling game headed to Nintendo's handheld on November 22 with the console versions' DLC characters and two exclusive modes.

WWE 12 is set for a November 22 release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, but THQ isn't completely ignoring handheld gamers eager to exchange season's beatings this year. The publisher today confirmed that the arcade-style WWE All Stars will arrive on the 3DS on the same day that its more simulation-driven counterpart hits consoles.

WWE All Stars debuted its exaggerated brand of wrestling action on a variety of platforms in March, but 3DS owners will be rewarded somewhat for their patience. In addition to the game's 3D visuals, WWE All Stars on the 3DS will include two exclusive new modes and 13 playable characters that were previously offered as downloadable add-ons for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of All Stars. With a roster pulled from the WWE's past and present, All Stars allowed for players to pit legends like The Ultimate Warrior and "Macho Man" Randy Savage against more contemporary grapplers like John Cena and Randy Orton.

While the game was released as an "over-the-top" alternative to THQ's primary WWE franchise, it might not have been sufficiently in excess of the top for the publisher's liking. Next year the company will publish WWE Brawl, which does away with the wrestling ring in favor of fully destructible environments and gives characters like the Undertaker and Triple H super powers and (more) exotic back stories.

For more on WWE All Stars, check out GameSpot's review of the game's original release.

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE heads to Rogers for 4G fall debut

Our neighbors to the north just got a one-two punch of wireless awesome delivered courtesy of Rogers. The operator announced today that its variant of Samsung's heavily lusted after Galaxy S II will be launching with baked-in LTE functionality on its nascent 4G network. Most of the handset's specs have remained the same, aside from a newly beefed-up 1.5GHz dual-core processor, NFC functionality and Hercules-sized 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. If you're proud to call yourself Canadian and "download speeds of up to 100Mbps" get your blood pumping, then expect to snag Sammy's beast phone when it goes on sale before Autumn's end.

Update: Interestingly, the Rogers site lists the Galaxy S II LTE as featuring a 1.2GHz CPU instead of the 1.5GHz slice of silicon that was announced only days ago. It may be a typo, or the Canadian carrier may have its version underclocked for a longer battery life. We've reached out for clarification and will update when we hear back.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Wipeout 2 tumbling out this holiday

Activision launching new edition of ABC's obstacle course game show on 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS, DS.

Activision isn't being deterred by a single Wipeout. Today, the publisher announced Wipeout 2, the latest game based on ABC's physical humiliation-based reality game show. A Kinect-enabled Xbox 360 version and Move-supported PlayStation 3 edition of Wipeout 2 will join installments on the Wii, DS, and 3DS this holiday.

Wipeout 2 brings the TV show's accident-prone obstacle courses to gamers' living rooms with more than 50 unique challenges. The obstacles will be tailored to the summer and winter seasons, with players navigating snow, ice, and foam in addition to trademark challenges such as Sucker Punch Wall and Big Balls. Show hosts John Anderson and John Henson will again voice the action.

Activision aims to tailor each edition of Wipeout 2 to its platform. As an example, PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers will be able to use their respective motion-sensing inputs to hurdle snow or paintballs at other players while navigating courses. Meanwhile, the handheld installments will feature a pass-and-play hot seat mode.

For an idea of what to expect, check out GameSpot's coverage of Wipeout: In the Zone, which was released for the Xbox 360 in June.

Riots database of 2.5m tweets reveals complex picture of interaction

Guardian analysis suggests social media was used far more by those seeking to follow ? or avoid ? events than to incite trouble

Interactive: Twitter traffic during the riots

When David Cameron addressed an emergency session of parliament convened in the aftermath of four consecutive nights of rioting and looting across England, he quickly turned to the supposed role played by social media.

"Everyone watching these horrific actions will be struck by how they were organised via social media," the prime minister told the House. "We are working with the police, the intelligence services and industry to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality."

His claims were backed by some MPs and senior police, who revealed they had considered switching off social network sites at the height of the disturbances, but were unsure of their legal powers.

Yet preliminary analysis of how Twitter was used during the unrest presents a more complex picture, showing little immediate evidence that the social network was used to orchestrate disorder.

The Guardian has compiled a unique database of more than 2.5m tweets containing keywords, phrases and hashtags linked to England's riots.

Preliminary analysis of this Twitter activity in 12 riot locations shows the majority of surging social media traffic occurs after the first verified reports of incidents in an area, which could suggest that Twitter was used far more by those seeking to follow fast-moving events than to incite trouble ? although it is not possible to say it played no role.

The tweets also reflect a shift in social media use during the week. Most reports place the initial disturbances in Tottenham between 8pm and 9pm on Saturday night. The number of tweets referencing the area surged in the wake of these first troubles: up from 15 between 7pm and 8pm to 15,000 between 10pm and 11pm.

Later in the week Twitter may even have helped spread warnings about trouble. On the following Tuesday Greater Manchester police gave a press conference at 2pm warning of potential issues later that day. This was mirrored by tweets mentioning the city jumping to over 1,000 an hour before trouble began, peaking at around 12,000 an hour after disturbances had started.

In areas such as Hackney Twitter filled with reports of stores closing early and police presence building in the area, hours ahead of the outbreak of trouble.

The Guardian database, which contains riot-related tweets sent between midnight on 6 August ? the day riots began in Tottenham ? and 8pm on 17 August, will be subject to more advanced analysis in the coming weeks as part of an ongoing investigation into the riots.

Several Facebook users have already been imprisoned for their use of the service during the unrest.

Two men who attempted to use Facebook to arrange riots, which did not materialise, were sentenced to four years in prison, while David Glyn Jones, 21, who posted: "Given the chance I'd love to smash up a police car, wouldn't you?", was sentenced to four months. The prime minister said he supported the "tough message" the court rulings had sent out.

Anecdotal evidence suggests BlackBerry Messenger was also used by some rioters to disseminate messages inciting unrest. However, the free pin-protected service, popular among young people, was also used extensively by those seeking to avoid trouble.

Executives from Facebook, Twitter and the BlackBerry manufacturer RIM, who have been resisting calls to shut down their networks, are to meet the home secretary to discuss further action.

Donovan, Marquez join Rooney on NA FIFA 12 cover

US striker, Mexican center back to join Manchester United forward on American iteration of EA Sports' latest soccer sim.

Last week, EA Sports announced that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney would grace the cover of the North American iteration of FIFA 12 as one of three athletes. The publisher today announced the other two footballers, naming rivals Landon Donovan and Rafael Marquez FIFA 12's additional cover stars in North America.

Donovan is currently a striker for the LA Galaxy Major League Soccer team. Marquez also plays in the MLS, as a center back for the New York Red Bulls. Donovan and Marquez also play for the US and Mexican national teams, respectively.

While Donovan and Marquez are working together to help promote FIFA 12, tonight in Philadelphia the two will go head-to-head. The United States will look for retribution when the squad takes on Mexico at 6 p.m. PDT. The US squad has lost three straight matches against Mexico, including the Gold Cup final in June by a 4-2 margin.

Hard Reset boots up September 13

Polish developer Flying Wild Hog today announced that its cyberpunk first-person shooter Hard Reset will launch on Steam September 13, exactly two months after the game was first announced. The shorter-than-usual turn-around time on the game will be matched by a cheaper-than-usual price, as it will sell for $30 on Valve's digital distribution service, with an additional 10 percent off for those who preorder the game.

Hard Reset is set in a bleak future at humanity's twilight. Under assault from robotic adversaries, civilization has contracted down to a single city called Bezoar. Players will take the role of military veteran Major Fletcher, who slowly uncovers the truth behind the cataclysmic conflict. The game will make use of the studio's Road Hog engine, which was built from the ground up for Hard Reset.

With a roster of 35 employees, Flying Wild Hog is a pastiche of developers with experience elsewhere in the Polish gaming scene. Specifically, the studio lists People Can Fly, CD Projekt Red, and City Interactive among its workers' previous employers.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus due for winter 2011 in Japan

PS Vita port of popular 2D fighting game from Arc System Works to have new characters and modes; update also coming for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Next to the Street Fighter IV series, the BlazBlue series is also a popular choice for gamers who wish to sate their fighting-game fix. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, the PlayStation Vita version of the fighting game, titled BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II Plus, will be out this winter in Japan.

This port will not only keep the game's original aspect ratio and resolution, thanks to the new console's specs, but it will also have new scenarios for the game's story mode, which may showcase stories for recently added characters like Makoto, Valkenhyn, and Platinum. The game will also feature a Network mode where players can fight each other in teams, as well as a reworked version of Abyss mode, which made its debut on the PSP version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II.

The port will bring in a new character: Relius Clover. The character made his appearance in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift's story mode as Carl Clover's evil father. Like his son, Relius controls a puppet called Ignis to help fight against his opponents. In contrast to his son's fighting style, he summons his puppet manually by pressing the drive button, in which he can follow up with moves of his own. The all-new playable character recently made his debut in a BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II update location test that was held on August 11 in Akihabara. The update itself will be made available in Japanese and Asian arcades this fall.

Famitsu also mentioned that this version of the game will be coming out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Whether this version will be sold as a retail game or as downloadable content to complement the existing version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift has yet to be confirmed.

iPhone N94 prototype's front assembly leaked, set to be an iPhone 4S?

As we approach the rumored September or October launch date for the next batch of iPhones, the web's been spiced up with photos of alleged parts for an "N94" iPhone prototype. We've been rather skeptical about them until the above photos landed in our inbox, courtesy of our friends from uBreakiFix. A little while back we'd already heard from our other sources that the N94 is set to be a cheaper version of the current iPhone 4 (probably the 8GB iPhone 4 mentioned by Reuters last week), which would explain why all these components and cables look super familiar. The only notable difference here is the funny dot right next to the sensor location above the earpiece -- the dotted pattern is very much like that used by the microphone and the webcam LED indicator on Mac computers, but obviously the latter is more likely the case here.

That said, do bear in mind that according to the mark along the bottom of this part, we're apparently looking at an "EVT1" (Engineering Verification Test) piece from March 3rd 2011 (making it about three months older than the white N94 back covers that made the rounds last week, assuming they're legit). Additionally, when our sources last checked around June and July, the N94 had yet to hit the DVT stage, so it's hard to determine whether these parts will remain the same in the final design, or whether the N94 will even make it to the production line at all.

On the other hand, our sources pointed out that an elusive N97 device -- previously reported by the Wall Street Journal as a tiny iPhone -- had already reached "DVT" (Design Verification Test) stage back in June, though there's little information about it other than that it's been tested with various cellular technologies (though plagued by some bugs related to switching between specific frequencies back then), plus it may sport a camera module supplied by Sony, which was semi-confirmed by Howard Stringer himself back in April. Whatever the N97 ends up being, hopefully we'll have something at least as slim as our little souvenir from Beijing.

[E-sports dail-E] Bomber wins MLG Raleigh, ESWC Scandal, TTC signs Noah ?The Prodigy? Solis

It?s time yet again for another eSports Dail-e!

MLG Raleigh SC2 Results ? Bomber takes the crown

Bomber entered the grand final with a 2-0 lead due to the extended series rule but lost the first set on Metalopolis after he could not survive Coca's endless swarms of banelings and mutas, streaming from both sides and surrounding his army times and times again. Coca continued to further display his skill in the second set, exploiting huge mistakes by Bomber - like bad tank positioning and undefended tech labs - to gain a huge lead but suddenly he was pierced by multiple marine attacks. Coca lost two of his bases and Bomber caught up in supply and with a final push the score was 3-1.

In the final set, Coca tried to break the terran with roach/baneling after defending his bunker rush but Bomber had too much of everything - marines, tanks and bunkers. After his spawning pool died to a marine drop and his desperate counter-attack failed, Coca tapped out, making ST_Bomber the MLG Raleigh champion.

Once again, the final standing were colored with Korean flags, taking top 6 in the tournament. The only foreigners that made it to the top 8 were EG's newest member HuK and Dignitas' Sjow.

MLG Raleigh Top 8
1st Bomber, $5.000
2nd Coca, $3.000
3rd DongRaeGu, $2.000
4th Nada, $1.400
5th Puma, $1.000
6th Her0, $700
7th Huk, $500
8th Sjow, $400

Can the Korean repeat this feat once again in Orlando? Probably, if he plays Terran. But we?ll find out October 14-16.

Major Teams Threaten Boycott of Electronic Sports World Cup

ESWC last week announced the prize distribution for their 2011 event. With it followed information about the qualifying process, in which invited teams would have to pay $1,000 fee in order to participate.

The fee was not well received by six major teams, as they today went on to threaten ESWC with a boycott. The teams are the 2010 winners Natus Vincere, SK Gaming, fnatic, mTw, mousesports and Evil Geniuses. The teams stress that should ESWC keep the fee, then these six teams will not attend the 2011 event.

Alexander "ZeroGravity" Kokhanovskiy, Natus Vincere CEO, stated the following:

"We were surprised with the idea to implement a registration fee instead of holding national qualifiers. The decision itself contradicts with the concept of World Championship because anyone can now "buy" himself a slot in the Grand Final. If tournament organizers stay idle to what professional e-Sports teams demand, you will not see ESWC 2010 champions defending their title this year."

Lars Eiben, mTw CEO, also issued a statement expressing a similar distaste for the fee.

We are not willing to pay a fee for a tournament that, on the one hand, solely exists on our players, and on the other hand, we have to bear all the costs for accommodation and travel. All teams share this opinion and have agreed on this boycott. We have decided to make a statement. The sport primarily thrives from us, the clans, and in recent years we have repeatedly seen such scenarios, and we never resisted.

Due to the, we have decided that this is the last straw, therefore we are taking this measure. We are open for discussions and are willing to find a compromise. The next step has to come from the ESWC management.

This all comes following controversy last week as the ESWC cut $45,000 from the Counterstrike prize pool, and the teams have basically stated that the ball is now in the ESWC?s court ? if they wish to see the six teams at the event in October, they?ll need to take action.

Fighting Game News - Noah ?The Prodigy? signs with The Traveling Circus

Noah ?The Prodigy? Solis, an 8 year old fighting game genius, has signed with new gaming team The Traveling Circus. He becomes one of the youngest players in professional gaming ever to be sponsored.

?I went with TTC as my sponsor because they treat me good, they are nice people, they give me hope in my future, and they believe in my ability," says Noah. "I like their name. They are nice to me, and my dad is comfortable with their character and my brothers approve."

Not only will Noah get to travel all over the world to compete for The Traveling Circus, he also scored his own clothing line, with designs reportedly by The Prodigy himself! I don?t know about you guys, but I am definitely looking forward to seeing what will come from Mr. Solis in the future!

Noah ?The Prodigy? Solis vs RoyalFlush at EVO 2011, MVC3

Keeping with the theme of the last story, we showcase The Prodigy?s impressive skillset in MvC3, with very impressive Hulk/Sentinel/Wesker play.

Scary stuff. I wouldn?t want to fight him. This kid will be the next Daigo, mark my words.

Nintendo Announces $70 Skyward Sword Bundle

We recently reported that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword would launch on November 20. The Wii exclusive has been on many gamers? must-buy lists, and when Nintendo finally revealed the launch date, Zelda fanatics were able to rest knowing that the game would indeed release later this year. Now, the Big N has made another notable announcement.

Aside from the standard $49.99 version of Skyward Sword, gamers will also be able to choose a special $69.99 bundle. This bundle will include a limited edition Zelda-themed Wii Remote Plus. The special controller will feature the Triforce logo and will come in a sweet golden hue.

Additionally, both the regular version and the $70 edition of Skyward Sword will include a CD with music from the upcoming Zelda 25th anniversary concert series. This special music CD will only come packed with original print run copies, so if you really want to listen to some live Zelda music, be sure to grab Skyward Sword early on.

These are some nice extras to what already looks like a potentially awesome game. Watch out for the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in a few months. November couldn?t come any sooner!

GScreen's Spacebook begins shipping this November, doubles your laptop editing fun

Twins, like cupcakes, are universally regarded as a good thing. So, it stands to reason that GScreen's attempt to double your laptop's screen size would be an equally appealing idea. Turns out, duping a display took the Alaska-based company a wee bit longer to fully flesh out, but the time has finally arrived for its debut. Shipping this November, the aptly-named Spacebook will bring a capacious, portable desktop solution to on-the-go creative professionals. The girthy, 10-pound rig won't be winning any style points from the svelte is better crowd, but that's easy to overlook given its dual 17-inch 1920 x 1080 screens, choice of a Core i5 or i7 processor, up to 8GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB of storage, NVIDIA's GeForce GTS 250 (1GB) and DVD burner -- all encased in a magnesium alloy frame. You can grab the entry level model for $1899, but the higher-end, two-headed beast will cost you $2099. If you're in the market for the king of all laptop displays, then head to the source to get your order on.

Big in Japan August 8-14: Monster Hunter and Pokemon spin-offs

Sega soccer title and Kirby game bumped down by latest Capcom and Nintendo titles; 3DS sales shoot back up due to price cut.

Gamers should never underestimate the power of offshoot titles, particularly if they come from large franchises like Monster Hunter and Pokemon. For the week of August 8-14 on the Japanese Media Creates sales chart, Monster Hunter and Pokemon spin-off titles took the top two spots, respectively. Monster Hunter Diary Poka Poka Felyne Village G sold 98,269 units in its debut, while Super Pokemon Rumble sold 86,294 units.

Capcom's spin-off title is an action game focused on the Monster Hunter world's Felyne race. Players control a group of Felynes as they hunt down monsters to restore their village to its former glory. Super Pokemon Rumble lets players duke it out amongst themselves using toy versions of existing Pokemon in an arena. Unlike the mothership titles, all battles between Pokemon toys are done in real time and through a top-down perspective a la Smash TV. The game will feature toy versions of Pokemon from all five generations of the series, including the recent Unova region Pokemon.

Meanwhile, Kirby Mass Attack gets bumped from second to fourth place with 52,173 units sold, while J. League Pro Soccer Club! 7 Euro Plus dropped considerably to seventh place with 30,291 units sold. Rhythm Heaven for the Wii climbed a notch with 63,590 units sold. The 3D version of Ocarina of Time returned to the top 10 at sixth place with 31,772 units sold. Two other Wii titles, Wii Sports Resort and Disney Epic Mickey, hung tough on the top 10, the former in ninth place with 20,524 units sold and the latter in 10th place with 15,536 units sold.

On the hardware front, the 3DS was the best-selling hardware for the week due to the recent price cut of the system. The system sold 196,077 units, compared to just 4,132 units for the week before. Thanks to Nintendo's announcement last month, the 3DS in Japan now costs 15,000 yen ($195), with the discount going into effect on August 11. Sony's two consoles are still within the top three, with the PSP selling 40,389 units and the PS3 selling 20,239 units. Despite a number of Wii titles on the software charts, the console itself is just below the top three consoles with 19,607 units sold.

Switched On: The accidental handset company, Part 1

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Tech company acquisitions often seek to reshape a company or even the entire industry. Buying Applied Semantics catalyzed Google's rise to online advertising dominance. Apple's purchase of NeXT transformed the former's operating system's roadmap. And HP's merger with Compaq created a $40 billion powerhouse vendor of Windows PCs.

That's not the case for "Googorola," a portmanteau that the world formerly knew only as an Italian blue cheese often crumbled into steak salads. Indeed, Google's recent announcement of its intent to acquire Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion may turn out to be the highest profile acquisition ever aimed at maintaining the status quo. Presaged by a blog post from Google's chief legal officer and punctuated by lockstep statements by Motorola's rival Android licensees praising legal protection, the blog post announcing the acquisition promised to "supercharge" Android. But the subsequent Google conference call regarding the merger reinforced that the "IP" Google seeks to acquire does not stand for "Incredible Phones." Google seeks to invigorate Android simply by having the freedom to progress unencumbered along the successful path it already has largely staked out.

Sony PRS-T1 e-reader spotted on Dutch retail site for 165 euros

It's nigh on a month since we caught the WiFi-toting Sony PRS-T1 flitting its way through the FCC. Now the unannounced e-reader has popped up again -- this time on a Dutch seller's webpage with some pics, specs and a price of €165 (or $240 after a straight currency conversion). If accurate, most of the new features merit a nod rather than a yelp: a six-inch 800x600 e-ink screen that allows dual-touch gestures like pinch-to-zoom; a plastic body that brings the weight down to 168g (six ounces, versus the 7.6-ounce PRS-650); plus, the inclusion of Wikipedia and Google search. Speaking of which, don't those look rather like Android buttons? Could it be that Sony is founding its latest Reader upon the omnipresent OS (as various rivals have done) and even permitting some of that green robot goodness to bubble to the surface? Perhaps it's better to wait than to speculate -- after all, recent rumors suggest that the official launch for this device is imminent.

Rooney, Kaka named FIFA 12 global cover stars

Manchester United striker and Brazilian midfielder lead soccer sim packaging athletes; region-specific athletes named.

Last week, Electronic Arts reported revenues of $999 million for its latest quarter, helped in part by the continuing success of FIFA 11, which has sold a massive 15 million units through June. Now, the publisher is talking about FIFA 12, having announced global and region-specific cover athletes for the game.

For the first time ever, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will front the cover of the North American iteration of FIFA 12. Joining him on the cover will be two additional players that will be named in mid-August. The other global cover athlete for FIFA 12 is Brazilian attacking midfielder Kaka.

As is regular for the FIFA franchise, the cover athletes vary from region to region. The full global cover athlete roster is below.

FIFA 12 is due out in North America on September 27, followed by a worldwide bow on September 30. EA Sports has updated the franchise in FIFA 12 with a new Player Impact Engine, as well as new dribbling mechanics in an effort to deliver a more realistic touch on the ball.

Defense has likewise been tweaked, with a greater emphasis being placed on position play and ball interception. The publisher is also introducing the EA Sports Football Club feature, a free service that offers news and updates on the real-world sport.

EA Sports also said that it has updated the game's Career mode. With FIFA 12, players will be able to live out storylines taken from real-world events. Career mode also boasts more than 500 officially licensed clubs. For more on the upcoming title, check out GameSpot's latest preview of FIFA 12.

FIFA 12 cover athlete by region (with more to be named later):

Global: Wayne Rooney and Kaka.
North America: Wayne Rooney and two others to be named in mid-August.
United Kingdom: Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere.

Apps rush: Spy Mouse, Peggle HD, Restaurant City, Hector Ep2 and more

What's new on the app stores on Thursday 25 August 2011

A burst of 15 apps for your consideration

Spy Mouse

As intro lines go for an App Store game, "Danger. Intrigue. Stealth. Cheese." has to be applauded. This is the new game from Firemint, the studio behind Flight Control and Real Racing. It builds on the line-drawing mechanic from the former, but with a madcap tale of cats'n'mouse to puzzle through.
iPhone

Peggle HD

PopCap Games took its time taking its addictive Peggle game to iPad, but the results look worth the wait. It offers 55 levels of ball-dropping fun, with the additional Peggle Nights add-on available as an in-app purchase.
iPad

Restaurant City: Gourmet Edition

Social games developer Playfish ? an EA subsidiary these days ? has brought its popular Facebook game Restaurant City to iPhone and iPad. As with rival Zynga's CityVille hometown, this is a new version for iOS, but the original game's mixture of cooking, customising and sharing remains intact.
iPhone / iPad

Someone Once Told Me

If you buy one app from this roundup, make it Someone Once Told Me. Based on the photo-blog of the same name, it lets you take a photo of yourself with a space to write in a piece of advice or a comment that someone once told you, and submit it to the site. More importantly, 70% of the 1.49 price will go to charity Operation Smile, which helps children with cleft lip and palate facial deformities. Great site, great app, great cause.
iPhone

HD Widgets

Cloud.tv has launched its HD Widgets app for Android Honeycomb tablets, which it claims offers widgets that are "far and away more detailed and attractive than first-gen widgets and are sure to make even iPad users a little envious". Expect plenty of homescreen customisation with 12 widget types to install.
Android

Hector: EP2

Love graphical adventures like the Monkey Island series, but want something all-new? The Hector series should be your first stop. Subtitled "Senseless Acts of Justice", this second Hector game for iOS promises "lewd, crude and gritty law-enforcement". Expect plenty of belly laughs, judging by the first game.
iPhone / iPad

Sprinkle

Sprinkle is hoping to be the next big casual hit for iPhone and iPad, getting players to douse fires with a water cannon mounted on a crane. Obstacles, spin-wheels and traps make that more complicated than it sounds in this clever physics-puzzler.
iPhone / iPad

Aupeo Personal Radio

Personal radio service Aupeo already has an iPhone app, but now it has a native iPad version too: one of the first streaming music services to do that in Europe. Users can listen to more than 100 customised stations, or create their own based on individual artists.
iPad

Edge Extended

Mobigame's Edge was critically acclaimed, but also the subject of a controversial trademark lawsuit after its original release. With that settled, Edge Extended is a sequel, with more levels, music and a new 3D graphics engine.
iPhone / iPad

Johnny English Reborn Mobile Spy Kit

Rowan Atkinson is starring in an upcoming revival of his Johnny English spy character, and there's an app out on iPhone in advance of the movie's October debut. The app includes various pseudo-spy features: voice disguiser, lie detector, intruder alarm and night vision camera. Content from the film is unlockable too.
iPhone

Contre Jour

Chillingo's latest iPhone game claims to be "blurring the lines between games and interactive art": players use their fingers to control the landscape rather than the game's hero Petit. Strange but rather wonderful-looking.
iPhone

The Moron Test HD

DistinctDev's popular Moron Test iPhone game has been ported to iPad, with a similar mixture of puzzles and mini-games.
iPad

My 1st JCB

Aimed at 1-5 year-olds, this iPhone app offers all manner of cartoon diggers and dumpers, with a mix of mini-games and creative activities based on the children's toy brand of the same name.
iPhone

Caring - Andr Franois

Caring is an app based on photographer Andr Franois' journey around Brazil taking shots of humane medical care. The book was published in 2006, but has now been turned into a free iPad app.
iPad

Kazaa

Remember Kazaa? Its days as a filesharing villain for the music industry are long gone: it's a licensed music subscription service now. And there's an app for that, albeit only in the US. The Kazaa iPhone app offers streaming songs and offline cacheing, artist radio and playlist creation. A $9.99 monthly subscription is required.
