There is little else that can match the drama, excitement and glamour of a poker match. The quintessential casino game has delighted and disappointed players for years and the opulence and glitz of a night at the casino is a unique feeling. Given its stylish roots, it's little wonder that celebrities love a good poker match.
In fact, some professional players have even become celebrities in their own right, earning thousands of dollars in fees for attending a casino or Las Vegas bash. Lady Gaga might think she has a good "p-p-poker face", but she's got nothing on these guys. Here we take a look at our favourite celebrity poker player.
As an actress, and star of American supernatural teen horror film 'The Craft', Robin Tunney is used to drama but she needed all her acting skills at a recent celebrity poker tournament when she netted $50,000 and the chance to play at the exclusive and highly respected World Series of Poker tournament in the Hollywood Hills. This invite-only event attracts the best professional players and most respected commentators, which meant Robin had to work to hold her nerve during her matches, as well as perfect her poker face.
While poker does possess an element of chance, a large amount of skill is also needed if you want to progress. This was demonstrated to perfection by British entrepreneur (and all-round boffin) Sir Clive Sinclair, who in 2003 won the first series of Celebrity Poker Club. This late-night game show ran for three years in the early noughties, and at one point attracted a huge audience.
Sir Clive's inclusion in the show was criticised by fans, who argued that the gifted businessman (he was the inventor of the slim line calculator, and is renowned for being a maths whizz) had too much of an advantage over the other players. Clive donated his winnings to charity in an effort to smooth things over, and the other contestants presumably tried not to get offended that they weren't considered clever enough to match Clive's intellectual prowess.
And speaking of charity, there's nothing celebs love more than raising a bit of cash for a good cause. It's all about the charidee, sweetie, and Carmen Electra got in on the act recently with her own celebrity poker match to raise money for brain tumour charity Head to Hollywood. The glitzy bash was held in Vegas's Hard Rock Hotel, and attracted celebrities such as Sean Penn, David Spade and Shannon Elizabeth. Over $100,000 was raised, and the stars finished off the night with a champagne-soaked after-party at the Hotel's club Body English; simply fabulous!
Of course, not all poker games involve cocktails and dancing with Sean Penn, but even your average, pyjama-clad, 'playing Texas Holdem poker online' night in with friends can still be fun. With the right snacks, music and even lighting you too could host a glam poker night to rival any of Hollywood's finest, so why not get your friends round and get playing? Repeat renditions of Gaga's Poker Face are entirely optional.
